Assemble for a Super Hero Birthday Party!

Do you have a little superhero at your house? Then this super hero birthday party is for you! This party is a mix of a Marvel Avengers inspired birthday party while featuring several familiar faces from the DC universe.

When planning a super hero birthday I focused on making a few things that tied to the theme in each main part of a party- the food, decor and activities and favors.

Super Hero Birthday Food

One of my favorite things to do is make sure my food table is a part of the decor. This makes a big statement and food and desserts are a part of the budget anyway! My mom helped by making this Captain America themed fruit tray. We used strawberries, yogurt pretzels, raspberries, blueberries and mini marshmallows inside of a star cookie cutter all on this white round tray.

To spread things out a bit we had the savory/main food outside, then desserts inside. This also helped with climate control. We had buckets on the table filled with pretzels, chips and pirate's booty. I did attempt to include some vegetables- I filled chinet cups with cut up veggies and individual hummus cups. I love these portable veggie cups- they've become a standard addition at every party! I've made them for our Farm-themed birthday party, our race-car birthday, golf-themed birthday party and even our One is Fun birthday party.

For drinks we filled two coolers with water bottles, mini bottles of lemonade, juice boxes and poppi.

We also did 'Hulk Cups,' a twist on the classic dirt pudding cup recipe. I definitely will be rebranding these as Frankenstein cups for Halloween! 🙂 To make these, draw a face on a chinet cup, fill with green jello pudding and add smashed oreos to the top! It's a fun and easy dessert to offer.

Other than that for the main food we did pizza. I usually try to do cute sandwiches or something but my 5-year old's favorite food is pizza, his friend's all love pizza... it's an easy win!

Cake and Desserts

Yellow, white and blue super hero themed birthday cake.

For the birthday cake I ordered a cake through Dolce Bakery. I love using this local bakery- not only are their cakes gorgeous but their team is super friendly and helpful and the treats are amazing. I also got our cupcakes from them! These cupcake toppers were so cheesy and fun with my son's face on them, but I feel like if you're doing a superhero birthday party you really need to embrace the bright colors and cheesiness!

Our cookies were from LauraBelle Bakes and I have never been so impressed with cookies! They were delicious of course, but the details! My son told me his top 6 favorite superheros and she brought them to life. I loved them so much I ended up ditching a cake topper and using sugar cookies instead.

Superhero Party Decorations

Decorating for birthdays is probably my favorite part. I love it more than picking out the food if I'm being honest! For this party I requested a custom balloon mosaic design and then added a smaller number '5' into it. My kiddo has several favorite superheros and they change frequently, so I wanted to have a few generic items instead of having all of one hero that he may not like the next day. Balloon displays are one of my favorite ways to make a big yet affordable impact for a party!

I purchased these cityscape boxes and used action figures on the tables to tie into the theme. I used black paper plates and napkins which were fun and easy to tie into things with the colors and I grabbed a box of these disposable utensils to set out for guests.

Favors and Activities

The bounce house was such a hit! I did purchase the viral bounce house from Sam's Club and it was a great buy, especially since I'll reuse it or loan it out to friends. This thing definitely held up with several little boys on it, which is a pretty good sign! My dad was a huge help in setting it up and taking it down, we ran an extension cord around the fence line so we could put it almost in the middle of the yard.

I made the balloon arch using a DIY kit from Lushra- they're our go to when making them on our own! I picked out the colors I wanted from their balloon bar to build this arch and then filled in some gaps with colors I already had. Check out this tutorial if you've never built a garland, and this one if you're looking for tips and tricks to hang one! If you're going to make your own balloon garland I highly recommend picking up one of these balloon pumps.

Punch game with party favors inside.

I made this punch game as a fun nod to Hulk. It had simple favors in it like bracelets, suckers and bubble wands. To make it I cut holes into the black foam board after tracking solo cups, then hot glued the foam board pieces together to create a box. I added tissue paper over the cups and used rubberbands to hold it together.

For favors, I used the arch backdrop we built initially to hold flower buckets and my friend Shelby painted it black for me. We had painted it pink and added the shelves for her daughter's birthday too! We picked out several Marvel-themed beanie babies and let kids pick which super hero they wanted to take home. This was such a hit with the kids. We even had some extras they could take home to their younger siblings which I loved!

The silver balloon arch was such a fun addition! I used these larger balloons and this smaller size.

These foil 'lifesize' or large superhero balloons were so cool! They added a big cool factor to the setup. Did you know you can deflate and save mylar balloons? Use a straw to let the air out, roll them up and save for your next event or pass along to a friend.

In the backyard I also set out a bucket with these fun planes and masks (similar) kids could take home. A lot of kids were wearing masks around the backyard and loved them!

Tips for Throwing a Super Hero Birthday Party

  • Don't be afraid for a cheesy party. I fully leaned into the superhero theme and the kids loved it! My son even had a custom shirt with his name on it in some super hero fonts.
  • I have a stash of these 50 cent plates from Target in blue and pink. It's easy to pull them out for any party/event and nice because you can wash and reuse them. I've collected nicer plates from thrift stores in white that we use for more formal events.
  • Instead of rebuilding something, think about how to repurpose! I love using my foam board arch for all kinds of things. We just repaint and it's ready to go!
