Today I'm excited to share with you how I created this felt heart garland. It's such a fun project to do on your own or with kiddos (if they're comfortable with scissors). It turned out so cute and I've already used it as a backdrop for my Galentine's Day Brunch and have it hanging in my dining room. Along with my balloon arch things are feeling very festive around here!
I suggest putting on your favorite show (mine is anything cooking/baking competitions!) and planning to spend a few hours on this. I hope you enjoy this heart garland tutorial! If you're interested in making garlands, check out our post on how to make your own pom pom garland!

Supplies for Heart Garland Tutorial
- Craft scissors
- Card stock- 1 sheet or a half sheet
- Sheets of felt- multiple colors
- Twine, string, or yarn
- White pom pom balls
- Hot glue Gun
How to Make Your Garland
- The first thing I did was draw a heart template on card stock and cut that out as a guide! If possible, use the guide without tracing it on the felt. I found that I preferred that look better but if you need to trace, just be mindful of what you're tracing with as it will bleed onto the felt and may show on the edges of the final product.
- Cut out the felt using the template. I made a total of 13 hearts, so 26 cut outs. I used 4 different colors of felt- a light pink, medium pink, dark pink, and red. The sky is the limit with what colors to use and it would be cute in one color or multiple colors!
- Cut 13 strips of twine, yarn, or string. Mine were approximately 8 inches long. Fold the twine or string of choice in half.
- Take 1 heart and place the folded piece of twine, fold side down, on the top center of the felt heart. Use the hot glue gun to glue the twine and along one side of the outer edge of the heart. Place a second felt heart on top so that the edges match up, and press together. This should form a pocket once the glue dries.
- Place a pom pom inside of the pocket, then add glue along the outer edge of the open half and press the felt together. Repeat for the remaining 12 hearts.
Stringing Your Garland
- Measure and cut out the desired length of twine needed for the felt heart garland. I used about 4 feet of twine.
- Tie the felt hearts to the string in the desired pattern. I knotted each heart tightly to the garland and then cut the excess twine from the heart. I made every every other heart shorter for a zig zag look, but this felt heart garland would be just as cute with all of the hearts hanging at the same length.
- If the knots are coming loose after cutting the excess twine, use the hot glue gun to seal both sides of the knot.
Tips for a Successful Felt Heart Garland
- Plan to spend about 1 ½ to 2 hours on this project!
- I found that putting the glue about ⅛ in from outside edge of the felt worked best and helped keep the glue from seeping out of the edges.
- Do not use very much glue when sealing the twine knots on the garland, just the tiniest little bit works and it will help prevent the knots from coming undone.
I hope you enjoyed this heart garland tutorial! Let me know how yours went and what colors you chose to do!
Happy Crafting!
