Mermaid Birthday Party Ideas for a Magical "Under the Sea" Bash

Ready to dive in and go under the sea for a spectacular three year old birthday party? This mermaid birthday theme is such a fun way to celebrate! We had a pool party including a shark pool float and lots of yummy treats.

Having a summer birthday in the midwest can include some unpredictable weather, but this table setup would be perfect either indoors or out! We kept the majority of the decorations around the one central area and it worked perfectly.

Mermaid Birthday Party Food

We had one main table with all the food and drinks on it. It made it easy for kids to hop out of the pool, grab a treat, then get right back to it! Not pictured is the pile of pizza boxes- because you really can't beat pizza at a kid's birthday party.

There was both a fruit and veggie tray, with dips, cupcakes, cake, and a fun mermaid-inspired punch. These shell plates were so cute and the mermaid party hats were a fun table decor addition! We found these cups with the most adorable scallops and these cupcake toppers.

Cake and Desserts

The cake was made by our friend Jes. She used to own a catering company and it was so delicious. It was a chocolate cake with an oreo cream filling. The sprinkles and decor were such a hit! It's the perfect mermaid cake!

She used these clear balloon decor pieces, these shells and starfish and these adorable sprinkles!

For drinks we made a kid-friendly ocean water punch. We used Hawaiian Punch, sprite and pineapple juice. There's not a direct ratio for measuring, but we used all of the hawaiian punch, then filled with the others until we loved the color. The color was absolutely perfect and it was a fun drink! The cups were from Meri Meri and the scallops are so fun.

Mermaid Party Decorations

The decor for this party was the sweetest! The balloon arch was from Bashify, and the pastel matte colors were so pretty. Check out this tutorial if you've never built a garland, and this one if you're looking for tips and tricks to hang one! If you're going to make your own balloon garland I highly recommend picking up one of these balloon pumps.

I did make a shell balloon mosaic. I just love how affordable and simple these foam board creations are. I've made a barn, castle, windmill, even a chamelleon at this point! I used this shell mosaic template, I've even had a custom superhero starburst made from this shop- the templates are simple and easy to follow.

One really fun thing about having a pool party was adding floats to the decor. This ride-on shark pool float was a favorite. These fun glitter rings made the pool sparkle and these little split rings tied everything into the theme.

I jut love all the purples, pinks and teals for this mermaid birthday! It was such a fun theme and the pool party was so much fun.

We scored at Target for the other detail pieces! The mermaid garland, party hats, backdrop garland, (we used two) and shell plates were all from their collection. Also the plastic shell cup for the birthday girl was from their party section!

Favors

For favors, we sent kiddos home with a sweet shell bag, rock candy and a candy bracelet. Treats work great as favors because parents don't have to find a place to store them when they get home. 🙂

Tips for Throwing a Mermaid Birthday Party

  • Simple is perfect! Pick a few things you really want to include and focus on those. We kept all the decor contained to one area, primarily the food table and it worked great.
  • Pastels and iridescence are perfect for a mermaid theme. We used pastel pink, purple, and teal and it looked magical.
  • If you have access to a pool then a pool party is the perfect extension to this theme! If not set up a kiddie pool and a water table and you'll still have a blast.
  • We had our party mid-morning, and it worked well to have treats, then lunch and more swimming.

I hope this helps you plan your own mermaid-themed birthday party! Let us know of any questions in the comments!
