Jump to Recipe Print Recipe

Whether you're hosting a kiddo party or planning a bigger event, this balloon star wall is an easy party backdrop that works great for photos. You just need some foil star balloons and an empty space to create this decoration!

This patriotic decoration is an easy DIY for any skill level. I I love a balloon garland or backdrop display, and this one was so simple to put together! t only took about an hour total.

Supplies

  • Red foil balloons
  • White foil balloons
  • Blue foil balloons
  • Painters tape
  • straw for inflating balloons

Directions

  1. Start by blowing up a few balloons in each color to get a general idea of how many you'll need for your wall. I used 4 blue, 8 red and 8 white star balloons in an 18" size.
  2. Wrap a piece of painters tape around your hand and adhere to the back of a ballon.
  3. Start placing your star balloons on the wall and pressing to the wall to secure them. I started with the blue stars to get an idea of how far across I should go with the red and white stripes.
  4. Add your red and white star balloons in a row to the side of the blue balloons to create the image of an American flag.
  5. When I first started the display I thought I would use 4 across, but I ended up using 5 balloons in each row.

Tips

  • While you could use command tape, scotch tape or other patches to get your balloons to stick I recommend painters tape because it won't ruin your walls. It also makes it easy to remove a star and add it to a different spot if necessary.
  • I tried 2-3 different painters tapes and this was hands down the best. This balloon star wall stayed in place overnight using this tape. The other 2 I tried (a generic blue and another brand) fell off within an hour or less. It may vary with the type of paint you have on your walls, but try a few.
  • Blow up a few of each color before using the entire pack. Depending on the size of your wall you may need more/less of each color.
  • If you don't have an insert to blow up the star balloons you can use a straw.

FAQ

How do you attach the foil balloons to a wall?

You can use scotch tape, command strips or any adhesive, but I found painter's tape to be the easiest to work with and best for removing without damaging the wall.

How do you blow up a foil balloon?

Use the provided straw or any straw you have to insert in the slot of the balloon. When you remove the straw it will create a seal.

How long will the balloons stay up?

When I used painters tape the balloons stayed up easily overnight with only 1-2 stars coming off the wall.
