Welcoming guests to a shower or party is a nice touch and an easy way to integrate your theme into each touch point of the event. You can use an easel and a sign, but these flower box welcome signs that are an a-frame shape have become super popular and it's easy to see why!
You can rent these, or buy a plan and make one from wood but I decided to try it with foam board and am so happy with how it turned out! The best part it was for under $10 for the base of the project/the foam board easle. (the flowers and vinyl would add to that cost) and I'll be able to reuse and re-customize it for other events. It only takes about an hour to make too! Less if you have the lettering prepped and ready to go. I do want to mention that since it's foam board it's obviously not as durable as the wood variations, but as long as you have it someplace inside or sheltered outside it's a great way to save some money and still have a statement sign.
Supplies
- 3 pieces of foam board- I did get the slightly thicker/heavier version but if you buy the basic it'd be even cheaper. ($2.99 vs $0.99)
- x-acto knife
- hot glue gun and mini glue sticks
- floral foam board
- Cricut vinyl (optional- I share a few alternate ideas below)
- faux flowers of choice- I grabbed mine at Hobby Lobby when they were 40% off

Flower Box Welcome Sign Steps
- Take one piece of your foam board and cut one piece into 5 inch strips.
- Measuring against the second piece of foam board, cut your 5-inch strip of foam board into the length of the board, repeat with one other piece. This will be the front and bottom of your 'box'.
- Using remnant pieces or another of your strips cut the small sides of the box and hot glue together.
- I would recommend doing your letters first- this was a part I had to redo to get the format and sizing I wanted. Adhere your letters to the foam board. I used my Cricut and black vinyl to make letters, but you could use stickers, freehand it, (or volunteer a friend with good penmanship) or even print and hang a little sign off the corner.
- After you have your letters on the foam board, you'll start the hot glueing. Use hot glue to put together your flower box and then adhere it to the 'base' foam board piece.
- Run hot glue along the top of one of the other pieces of foam board and press/hold them together.
- Cut your floral foam to size to fit in the box.
- Cut your faux flower stems down so they're the length you want and poke those into floral foam.
Tips
- Start by adding your lettering to your base foam board piece, it's easier to keep it straight when the foam board is flat.
- Put the flower box about 6 inches from the bottom, that gives you a bit of room to use some taller flowers.
- I love my little wireless hot glue gun, I do get frustrated when it doesn't stay charged but it's been handy for projects like this so I don't have to stay near a wall plug.
- Using a heavier foam board makes this a bit more durable, so in my opinion worth it. You could save a bit more money using the thinner option but then make sure it's inside/secured.
Thanks for reading! Let me know if you have any questions- if you make this I'd love to see it too!
